Goddess Lakshmi embodies wealth, prosperity, fertility, and beauty, deriving her name from the Sanskrit word “Lakshya,” meaning “aim.” Adorned in golden and red attire, with radiant golden skin, she possesses four hands, holding lotus flowers in the upper pair and bestowing blessings in the form of coins or flower petals with the lower hands upon her devotees.

Representing the four aims of human life—righteousness (dharma), desire (kama), wealth (artha), and liberation (moksha)—Lakshmi epitomizes independence, fortune, beauty, and intelligence. Often depicted seated or standing on a magnificent lotus flower, symbolizing beauty, purity, fertility, and love, she is flanked by elephants spraying water, signifying continuous effort aligned with one’s duties and prosperity.

In Hindu mythology, during the churning of the ocean of milk in the Mahabharata, Lakshmi emerged, dressed in white, from the sea of milk or butter. Renowned for her beauty, tranquility, and youth, she is also known as “Ksirabdhitanaya,” meaning “daughter of the sea of milk.” Offering her body, soul, and heart to Lord Vishnu, she remains perpetually by his side, earning him the epithet “Srinivasa,” signifying his association with Lakshmi as her protector and dwelling place.
